Kids Fishing Florida Keys Style

All of our Captains have children and one of our favorite things to do is see the smile and excitement of a child when they are out on the water.

We love sharing the passion and welcoming kids into the fishing arena.

Several times throughout the season in Islamorad we will take local school kids for trips on “That’s Right” to let them learn and explore the reefs and waterways of the Keys.

Capt Aaron on the “Pretty Work” and Capt Ron on “Pirate for Hire” both enjoy putting kids of all ages on the fish. Watching a child light at as a Mahi explodes into an acrobastic display, or the look of intrigue as a child catches a shark.

Please enjoy these photos of our adventures with kids over the last few trips.

Spring is Great in the Backcountry and Shallows of the Fla Keys

This time of year can be magical everything is in transition when the waters begin to warm. Bait begins to amass and the brawlers of the backcountry shake off the winter chill.

Late April/May has seen the Tarpon join the party as well as  the Snook showing up strong. Capt Ron has had a good winter on the trout but spring has made that even better.

We are still finding Red Fish and drum as well as all sorts of rod bending light tackle quarry. Big jacks are on patrol along with Bluefish and some pompano. A fun catch and release fishery is finding some of the giant Goliath grouper hang outs as well.

Variety is the spice of life and Capt Ron is a master at finding you some rod bending action.

“That’s Right” Grouper Opening May 1st

Well we have been waiting for the opener to get here as we have been releasing a ton of quality fish since the season has closed. In the meantime we have been getting in on the mahi action and put a few Hoo’s in the box as well.

On the reef we have seen some good Yellowtails returning as well as some really nice muttons as well.

The fishing has been very good especially the Mahi as “pretty Work has been finding some monsters on their full day trips. Most of our trips have been to the reef and with Grouper coming on soon it should be fun fishing comin up.

Give us a call to book your trip of a lifetime!

Running of the Bulls: Pretty Work Style

And the Cows too. The Mahi Mahi run has begun and is in full force. We have seen some really nice fish up to 48lbs. Some in the 30lb range and plenty in the 20lb range. So after a strange spring fishing has broke wide open.

We have seen good days with the AJ’s as well when clients have wanted to give the Mahi a break. The Permit have made a showing as well and we have connected with them as well. Tripletail’s have been found under flotsom and a re fun to pull out on light tackle.

The sails are around as well still and have been making a showing as well.

Grouper season opens in 2 days and we are expecting some great catches.

Give us a call and get in some awesome fishing.

Zach Brown ” That’s Right”

Yes that Zach Brown, We had the privilege to have Zach and his family out with us for a day on the water. His daughter justice was a snorkeling natural after quick instructions from her dad.

Zach and his party also tried their hand at some spearfishing along the reef chasing snapper. It was a great pleasure to have them join us for a beautiful day on the water.

We wish Zach and the Zach Brown Band the best of luck for his continued success at the top of the Country Music World

Fishing with NFL WR Domenik Hixon

It was our Pleasure to have former NY Giant and current Carolina Panther join us this past weekend for his Bachelor party fishing trip. Working with his Best Man Milan Smith to get this together and make it happen for Domenik while he was criss crossing the country meeting with NFL teams was fun.

Weather did not make things easy, we were scheduled for a Friday trip but a nasty front came through with high winds and cold temps Thursday night. So we rescheduled for Saturday.

Domenik is a great guy and his group was a lot of fun, although conditions were not ideal he and his group managed to get a few fish over the rail. Domenik nailed a nice King Mackerel. The group managed a few more kings and a handful of yellowtail snappers to bend the rods in what was a tough day fishing. Bait has been scarce with all of the cold weather keeping a tight grip on us. So we had no real chance at sails, mahi or even any AJ’s. This weather has been brutal this spring.

Good news is looks like temperatures will be getting back to normal this week!

We would like to wish Domenik Hixon the best of luck to him and his future bride. We are looking forward to following your career as a Carolina Panther. We hope to see you in Ocean City Maryland for the Tuna run and hope we can put it together and get you in on that great fishery this June or July prior to training camp.

Tough Pick

Well it has been very trying on the fishing front the last week in Islamorada FL. We tell it like it is and if its tough well it’s tough. We have been experiencing the coldest temperatures seen here since 1969.

Pretty Work has been able to find a few sails, mahi and a pick of Blackfins. The reef has just barely given up enough snappers for a dinner but thats about it. The water has been cold and gin clear. Things are looking like a warm up is coming so things should start picking up.
